A Creative's Guide to Shining on Social

Jumping on social media to promote your creative project can be a bit intimidating. There's no shortage of musicians, artists, filmmakers, and influencers on all of these platforms, and it's easy to feel like you are fading into the background. When you start thinking about social media as a competition to shine, it can feel like a popularity contest, which scares many creatives. But I'm here to share a few practical ways to give you and your creative project an effective and exciting social media presence to help you connect with your target audience.

Create a separate social media page dedicated to your creative brand/project

Building an audience starts with making sure you and your brand or project are easy to find and identify. While many creators tend to merge their personal page with their creative projects, this muddies the water a little bit. It can also limit the types of content you share. That's why you'll want to create a separate social media profile designed and dedicated to promoting your creative project. Be sure to use clear images of your work, a logo or type treatment, and select a relevant, unique name for your page.

Establish a Brand/Project "Voice" and Stick to it

The best way to build an audience is to make sure you're able to speak directly to them as if they were sitting across the table from you. This means establishing a tone, writing style, editing for your content, and being consistent with it. Establishing this early on makes it easier to determine what type of content will follow.

For example, if your creative project is a comedic short film about a hilarious sibling rivalry, the voice of the page would be funny and sarcastic.

If you research target audiences for what you're working on, that will also inform you on what type of voice they respond well to.

Bring Your Audience Behind the Scenes With You

I don't care what the creative project is, everyone loves behind-the-scenes content! Whether it is seeing the script to a movie before it's published, seeing concept art for new video games, or seeing the raw edits in developing an ad campaign, it's exciting to see the process behind the product.

Bringing your followers behind the scenes and giving insight into what you are working on is a great way to make them feel like they're on a more intimate level with you. By giving them glimpses into the inner workings of your industry, you will get them excited about being part of it and supporting it!

ENGAGE, ENGAGE, ENGAGE.

One of the main reasons social media is so beneficial to creatives is that it provides a space for creators to interact with the people who support their work. Social media removes the distance between you and your supporters. When you respond to comments and dm's from people who love your work, you make it clear that they matter. And who doesn't want to feel like they matter? Though it may be a bit tedious to respond to every comment, mention, and direct message, it will definitely help you in the long run.

Building a solid social media presence for your creative brand or project may seem like an uphill battle at first, but with dedication, consistency, and some fun content, you’ll be shining on social in no time!
